Abstract

This paper argues that, contrary to the majority scholarly opinion, Livy’s characteristic placing of expiation ceremonies in Rome at the start of the Roman year conforms to the historical reality. The conclusion is important both for the appreciation of Livy as a historian and for the study of Roman republican history and of the place of public religion within it.
