Journal History

Histos, the on-line journal of ancient historiography, was founded in 1996 by John Moles, then of the University of Durham, who was also its Editor, supported by an Editorial Board of scholars from the UK and North America. Four issues appeared from 1997 to 2000, and many of the articles that appeared during those years have since become standard works in the study of ancient historiography. The website for Histos was hosted by the University of Durham from 1996 to 2011.

In 2010 a decision was made to re-start Histos, under the editorship of John Moles, now of Newcastle University, and with the addition of John Marincola, of Florida State University, as co-editor. The new site, now hosted by Newcastle University, was launched in June 2011, and the earlier material from volumes 1 to 4 was transferred to the new site, the older contributions having been converted from HTML format to PDF.

Marincola stepped down as co-editor in 2014, concentrating his efforts on editing the new series of Histos supplementary volumes. Christopher Krebs of Stanford University became co-editor on 1 January 2015. Following John Moles' untimely death on 4 October 2015, Krebs remained on as sole editor, holding that position until 31 December 2017. As of 2018, the co-editors of Histos are Rhiannon Ash (Merton College, Oxford) and Timothy Rood (St Hugh's College, Oxford). Adam Kemezis of the University of Alberta is currently the Reviews editor, having taken over from Federico Santangelo of Newcastle University who did yeoman service from 2013 through 2020. Marincola retired from Histos in 2023. Adam Kemezis now serves as Managing Editor. Thilo Rising assists the editors with copy-editing and formatting, and maintains the journal’s website. The journal is now a part of the University of Alberta Open Journal Publishing program.
